Frames of War: When Is Life Grievable?
I am most pleased and honored to have won a prize for Frames of War: When Is Life Grievable?, published in traditional Chinese. It is especially important now that work in philosophy, ethics, and critical theory enter into public debates in new ways. As some part of the world is in war, and another part is threatened by war (or threatening war), it is a moment to remember the brutal costs of war. The most brutal and steepest cost is, of course, human life, but also the soil and the air, and the complex and interdependent world of the living. It matters now how we tell the story of conflict, how we portray enemies through our images, and how often it is decided whose lives should be protected and whose lives are considered dispensable. Only a radical equality among the living can keep us from suffering war again. For this we need both remembrance and commitment in the public sphere, in our writing, filming, drawing, and music. We should rally all our senses in opposition to war, for war will rob us of feeling even as it submerges us in grief without end. Let us produce philosophy that affirms our opposition to war and our solidarity with the lost and the living. Thank you for this great honor.
I can't believe I won! What an amazing surprise. What a fantastic way to start the year! I'm so glad (and shocked!) that many people would like my little drawings and slightly longer explanations. I hope that they have given someone, somewhere a door into philosophy. I'm sorry about some of my bad jokes. Especially if they were about your favourite philosopher! Thank you everyone again"
